Endodontic Surgery in Chicago, IL
Endodontic surgery, commonly known as a root canal, may be needed when decay on the surface of the tooth has reached the nerve and when experiencing unexplained tooth or jaw pain. A root canal procedure is usually planned in order to save the tooth and eliminate tooth pain.
Do you need root canal surgery?
The most common signs that tooth decay has possibly reached the nerve and you may need root canal treatment include:
- Sharp or dull pain in the mouth or jaw
- Teeth that are sensitive to hot and cold food or drinks
- Unexplained intermittent pain or discomfort
While there are risks when undergoing any medical procedure, there are far more risks associated with NOT receiving root canal treatment vs. receiving root canal treatment. The most common risks with receiving root canal treatment are possible root canal retreatment or, if the tooth decay is extensive and root canal treatment cannot save the tooth, tooth removal and immediate implant placement.
However, left untreated, a decayed tooth can lead to bone loss, abscess formation, facial swelling, systemic spread, and tooth loss.
Tips for Treatment Success
Do you need a root canal or are you getting prepared to receive a root canal? Here are some tips you can implement before and after your root canal treatment to assist with the longevity of your root canal.
- Eat a good breakfast before the root canal procedure, as you may experience numbness for two to four hours after the procedure.
- After the root canal limit crunchy foods until the final crown has been placed and Dr. Adekola has informed that your tooth is protected.
- Brush and floss your teeth daily to prevent further decay and the need for root canals. This should be done in the morning and at night.
- Floss your teeth regularly and especially around your root canal treated tooth to promote the longevity of your root canal.
- Limit or remove sugary drinks and food from your diet. There is nothing decay loves more than sugar. Sugar feeds the decay. The more you can limit sugar, the more you can prevent further decay and cavities from forming on other teeth.
How is endodontic surgery different at More Smiles of Beverly?
Root canals performed at our Chicago dental office are done using advanced protocols, technology, and case selection standards that go beyond what’s typically offered by many general dentists. This includes advanced imaging to evaluate root canal anatomy, infection extent, and restorability before starting treatment. We also place a strong emphasis on effective anesthesia and patient comfort, especially for teeth that are already painful or infected.
More Smiles of Beverly takes a comprehensive approach, addressing the mouth as a whole. Our goal is not only to treat the tooth with root canal treatment but to work in prevention to stop any additional teeth from needing root canal treatment. We aim to treat the source at the source. “I had a root canal on tooth number nine after experiencing pain and instability. The root canal treatment removed the infection and saved my natural tooth. To ensure long-term success after the root canal, my dental team placed a bridge with two crowns to reinforce my bite and protect the treated tooth. Thanks to the root canal and proper restoration, I can confidently bite into apples using teeth eight and nine. My root canal has lasted 12 years and continues to function comfortably and securely. I give this place five stars.” - Michelle D.
